If you avoid getting dental care because you don’t understand how dental insurance works, this post is for you! It’s important to receive the dental care that you need, but it’s also important to discover the best way to make your oral health care fit within your budget.
Your dentist in Weymouth is here to help you do that with the information we have to share in this week’s blog post.
Dental Insurance is a Bit Different Than Medical Insurance
You’ve probably noticed that you must pay a premium for medical insurance and a separate premium for dental insurance—but why is that? After all, your overall body’s health is closely related to your oral health. However, that’s not the way that insurance works.
Dental care benefits offer patients coverage for almost all regular preventive care, meaning that it’s easier for patients to avoid dental problems when they take advantage of their dental benefits compared to medical benefits.
Understanding In-Network and Out-of-Network Costs
Your dental insurance benefits plan does have a few different guidelines that you must follow to have the majority of your care covered. One of them is that they highly recommend that you use an in-network provider, or basically visit a dental office that has already partnered with your insurance company. This helps to reduce the costs that your insurance company will be forking out by referring patients to that particular dentist.
However, if you do choose to visit an out-of-network provider than you will be responsible for some out of pocket costs. Usually, these costs are minimal, so it’s best to choose a dentist that makes you feel comfortable despite what your benefits plan says.
How Do I Know Which Insurances a Practice Takes?
When you are considering visiting a new practice, you can always visit their website to see what insurance companies that they work with. Usually, under the “new patients” tab on their website, you can see if they are an in-network provider with your benefits plan or if they offer other financial options for patients who don’t have insurance.
If insurance is still a bit confusing, don’t feel like you have to figure it out alone. You can always give your local practice a call for assistance. The friendly office team would be happy to help you understand what you’re covered for and even reach out to your insurance provider for clarification.
